Gallery 3N: Shien

Shien was a “house name’ used by the publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō from the 1930s through the 1950s. The seal appears on small prints designed by unnamed shin hanga artists. It has been speculated that some of these artists may have been Hasui Kawase, Tsuchiya Koitsu, and Shiro Kasamatsu. However, it is unclear why these otherwise well-known artists would have not been identified with their own seals as was typical for most of their work in small formats.
