Masao Maeda (1904 - 1974) worked in the sosaku hanga tradition of fully producing artworks including the creation of the design, carving of the blocks, and printing the works. However, the availability of small works by the artist in a catalogue of woodblock prints available as Christmas Card inserts, suggests that he, like many sosaku hanga artists, also produced designs that were carved and printed by others rather than by the artist himself. Masao’s initial connection to woodblock printing was through the sosaku-hanga movement leader, Hiratsuka Un'ichi, and his group of artists. Masao later joined the Ichimoku-kai1 (First Thursday Society led by Onchi Koshiro. Additional works by the artist can be viewed in Gallery 12: Ex Libris.
